1. The booking window myth
You've heard "book 6 weeks ahead." That's outdated. The 2026 sweet spots, based on our and major OTA data:
- Domestic flights: 1–3 months out is optimal. Last-minute (under 14 days) is now the worst window — pre-pandemic last-minute deals have largely vanished.
- Short-haul international (under 6 hours): 2–4 months out.
- Long-haul international: 5–8 months out is the sweet spot. Some routes hit lowest 6 months ahead, then drift up.
The fastest way to validate booking timing is the Google Flights price-history graph for your exact route. If today's fare is below the year's average, book.
Never book on the first site you visit. Run any route through 2 metasearch engines first — Google Flights + Skyscanner covers 95%+ of available fares globally. Add Kayak or Momondo for European routes.
Metasearch engines don't sell tickets — they just compare prices. Once you've found the cheapest, book directly on the airline's site whenever possible. You'll get better customer service, easier changes, and the airline can't blame an OTA if something goes wrong.
3. Be flexible where you can
Three flexibility levers, in order of savings impact:
- Day of week: Tuesday and Wednesday departures are 10–25% cheaper than Friday/Sunday on most routes.
- Airport: Secondary airports often save $100+. Check airports within 100km of your destination.
- Time of day: Red-eye and dawn flights are typically the cheapest of the day.
Use the Skyscanner "Everywhere" search and the Momondo calendar view to find these patterns visually.
4. Watch for hidden fees
The advertised fare on an OTA is rarely the final price. Common stealth charges to expect during checkout:
- Booking fee: $0 on direct airlines, $5–35 on most OTAs (Kiwi.com is often the highest).
- Card processing fee: Often 1.5–3% on credit cards, free on bank transfer.
- Seat selection: $15–60 per passenger on low-cost carriers — free if you let the airline auto-assign.
- Baggage: Most basic-economy fares now exclude even carry-on. Always add this before comparing total prices.
- Insurance pre-checked: OTAs often pre-tick travel insurance. Uncheck it unless you genuinely want it.
5. Stack loyalty programs properly
Even one-time flyers can earn meaningful rewards. The 3 rules:
- Pick one airline alliance per region. Star Alliance, OneWorld, or SkyTeam. Earning across them is mostly wasted.
- Use a credit card that earns transferable points. American Express MR, Chase UR, Citi ThankYou — these convert to multiple airlines at favorable rates.
- Book OTAs that have their own reward layer. MakeMyTrip myCash, Expedia One Key, Booking.com Genius — these stack with airline miles.
6. Always read the refund fine-print
"Refundable" rarely means full refund. Always check before booking:
- How much is the cancellation fee in $? (Not as a percentage — that's misleading.)
- Is the refund cash or only travel credit?
- What's the refund processing time? (5 days on Yatra, sometimes 30+ days on Kiwi.com.)
- Does it cover schedule changes, or only voluntary cancellations?
