Never book on the first hotel site you visit. Run any search through 2 metasearch engines first — Trivago or Google Hotels covers 95%+ of available rates. Each pulls from 100+ OTAs and direct sites and shows you the cheapest source for the same room.
Same room, three sources is normal — Booking.com may have it at $120, Agoda at $108, the hotel direct site at $115 with breakfast included. The metasearch tells you which to click.
2. The book direct rule
For chain hotels (Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Hyatt), always check the chain's own site before booking through an OTA. Most chains now have "best rate guarantees" — if you find a lower OTA price, they'll match it AND give you a small discount on top. Plus:
- You earn loyalty points — OTA bookings often don't qualify.
- Elite benefits trigger — upgrades, late checkout, free wifi.
- Easier changes — the hotel decides, not a third-party customer-service queue.
- Better rooms — front desks often save the worst rooms (over the elevator, near the ice machine) for OTA bookings.
3. The timing rules
Hotel pricing is far less predictable than flights — but our 2026 rules of thumb still hold:
- Leisure destinations: Book 3–6 weeks ahead. Last-minute (under 7 days) is usually most expensive.
- Business hotels in city centers: Last-minute can actually be cheapest — corporate cancellations free up inventory.
- Resort properties: 4–6 months ahead unlocks "early bird" pricing tiers that drop 20–30%.
- Sunday nights: Almost always cheapest in business cities. Friday/Saturday cheapest in business districts, most expensive in leisure cities.
- Cancel and rebook: If the price drops after your free-cancel booking, cancel and rebook. Works on Booking.com and Agoda where most rooms are refundable.
4. Stack loyalty programs properly
Even one-time travelers can earn meaningful rewards. The 4 rules:
- Pick one chain loyalty program per region. Marriott (8,500+ hotels), Hilton (7,500+) and IHG (6,000+) cover most cities. Earning across all three is mostly wasted.
- Use a credit card that earns transferable points. Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou — these convert to hotel programs at favorable rates.
- Status matters more than points. Marriott Platinum (50 nights/year) and Hilton Diamond (60 nights) routinely save you $100+ per stay in upgrades, breakfast and lounge access.
- OTA loyalty stacks differently. Booking.com Genius, Expedia One Key and Agoda Cash add 4–15% off on top of base rates — useful even for non-chain hotels.
5. Hotel vs vacation rental: The math
The Airbnb/Vrbo cleaning-fee era has changed the math. Quick guidelines:
- 1–2 nights: Hotel almost always wins. Cleaning fees on Airbnb (often $50–$150) destroy short-stay economics.
- 3–4 nights: Mixed. Run both numbers including all fees.
- 5+ nights: Vacation rental usually wins, especially for families. Self-catering also saves on meals.
- Solo travelers: Hotels almost always win — vacation rentals are priced for groups.
- Always compare total price: Airbnb's headline price plus cleaning + service fees can be 40% higher than the per-night rate.
6. Always check cancellation terms
Refund flexibility differs wildly by platform and rate type:
- Booking.com: Most rates are "Free cancellation until X" — typically 24–48 hours before check-in. Always check before booking.
- Agoda: Mix of refundable and non-refundable rates. The "non-refundable" rate is usually 10–20% cheaper but pre-paid.
- Expedia / Hotels.com: Free cancellation up to 24–48 hours before, on most listings.
- Airbnb / Vrbo: Host-set cancellation policies — read carefully. Strict policies forfeit 50% on cancellation within 7 days of check-in.
- Direct chain bookings: Usually 4 PM same-day cancellation. The most flexible.
Our rule: book refundable rates until 7 days before travel. If your plans solidify, switch to non-refundable then to save 10–20%.
