How Comparees started

It began with a refrigerator

In early 2021, our co-founder spent four full weekends researching a refrigerator. He read 47 articles, watched 18 YouTube videos, scrolled through Amazon reviews, called 6 friends โ€” and still ended up with a fridge that broke down after 14 months. Every "Top 10 Best Refrigerators" article was an affiliate honeypot. Every "honest review" was a paid placement.

So he texted three friends โ€” a journalist, a product engineer and a former retail manager โ€” and asked: "Why does no one actually test the products they recommend?" Two weeks later, Comparees was incorporated.

From 4 friends to 38 people

We launched in May 2021 with one category page โ€” refrigerators โ€” and three real reviews where we'd actually bought, installed and used the products for 90 days. The article ranked in week six. By month four, we'd added air conditioners and washing machines. By the end of 2022, we covered 5 categories. By 2024, all 11 you see today.

Today Comparees is staffed by 38 people across Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune โ€” 12 full-time editors and journalists, 8 product testers, 6 photographers, plus engineering, design, partnerships and operations.

What hasn't changed

Three things from day one are non-negotiable: we buy what we test (no free samples, no PR loans), we test long-term (90 days minimum, often 6โ€“12 months), and we publish what we find โ€” even when the product disappoints, even when the brand pays us a higher affiliate commission. The whole reason Comparees exists is because nobody else does this. Read our full methodology.

Six things we don't compromise on

The values that have guided every editorial decision since Comparees launched in May 2021 โ€” and the reason 1.4 million shoppers come back every month.

i

Independence over revenue

We've walked away from $400,000+ in advertising deals that required positive coverage. Brands cannot pay to appear in or be excluded from any comparison. Full editorial control sits with the editors, not the business side.

ii

Real testing

We buy every product with our own money. No free samples. No PR loans. No "review units." We've spent over $200,000 on test purchases since 2021 โ€” including products we knew would underperform.

iii

Long-form by default

Our average article runs 14 minutes. Buying guides hit 16โ€“18. Brand investigations go 22+. We don't write 600-word listicles that exist only to rank on Google. If a topic doesn't need depth, we don't write it.

iv

Honest verdicts

Every comparison ends with a clear winner โ€” or a clear "it depends, here's when each wins." No hedging, no fake neutrality. If Nike beats Adidas on running, we say so directly.

v

India-first, globally honest

We started in India and our deepest expertise is here โ€” but we use USD pricing across the site for global consistency. We cover Indian brands like Prestige and CP Plus with the same rigor as global brands like Samsung and LG.

vi

Reader over brand

When our reader's interests and a brand's interests conflict, the reader wins. Every time. That's why we'll flag a popular product for poor service records, even when it's a top affiliate earner. It's slower revenue but compounding trust.

The Comparees methodology

Real purchase model

Every product reviewed at Comparees is bought with our own money. We never accept samples, gifted units, or PR loans. The tax invoices and product serial numbers sit in our archive โ€” we'll show them on request. This single rule eliminates 90% of the conflict-of-interest problem that plagues affiliate-driven review sites.

The 8-criteria scoring system

Each comparison scores both brands on 8โ€“10 category-specific weighted criteria โ€” never just one or two cherry-picked metrics. Examples:

  • Refrigerators: Cooling, energy bills, smart features, build, service, noise, capacity, warranty.
  • Running shoes: Fit, cushioning, stability, weight, breathability, durability, value, aesthetic.
  • Pressure cookers: Build, safety, gasket life, weight, ease of cleaning, capacity, service, price-per-use.

Weights are documented publicly. If your priorities differ, the data is still useful โ€” you can re-weight yourself.

Long-term testing

Lab tests don't replace real use. Our reviewers cook with cookware for 90+ days, run in shoes for 300+ miles, install appliances and live with them for 6+ months. A surprise failure at month 4 changes our rating โ€” and we'll tell you why. Total testing hours since 2021: 11,000+.

Aggregate user signal

We pair our own testing with verified reviews from Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Trustpilot and Google โ€” flagged for fake patterns โ€” so our verdicts reflect both editorial expertise and real-world consumer experience.

What readers say

The kind feedback that keeps us going โ€” from real readers who've made real shopping decisions with Comparees as their second opinion.

"

The Daikin vs Voltas comparison saved me from buying the wrong AC twice. Bought the Daikin in May 2024 based on Comparees' verdict โ€” my electricity bill dropped by 28% the first summer. Every comparison I've read here has matched my real-world experience.

As a regular pressure-cooker user, I'd been a Prestige loyalist for 15 years. Comparees' Prestige vs Hawkins piece convinced me to try Hawkins Contura. 18 months in, I'm a convert. They don't pull punches โ€” they tell you exactly what each brand does better. Rare in the affiliate world.

I work in product, so I notice when a review feels staged. Comparees doesn't. The LG vs Samsung piece called out specific service issues in Samsung's South India network โ€” something only someone who actually had service done would know. That's when I started trusting them.

How we make money

If you're not paying for the product, you are the product โ€” that's the rule for most ad-driven websites. Here's exactly how Comparees stays in business while staying independent.

โœ“

What we do

Affiliate commissions. When you click through to Amazon, Flipkart, brand websites or booking platforms and buy something, we earn a small commission. This doesn't change your price, and it never influences rankings or verdicts.

Newsletter & Premium reports. Our weekly Compare Brief is free. Annual category deep-dives are sold as paid PDF reports to enterprise buyers (real-estate developers, retail buyers, etc.).

Brand consulting. A small consulting arm advises brands on consumer-side product issues โ€” strictly walled off from editorial. Read our full affiliate disclosure.

What we don't do

No paid placements. No brand pays us to be featured in any comparison, "best of" list, or buying guide. Period. We've turned down over $400,000 in deals that required positive coverage.

No sponsored content disguised as editorial. If something is sponsored, it's labeled clearly. We don't run "native advertising" that looks like a story.

No data selling. We don't sell or share reader data with third parties. Our privacy policy is plain English โ€” read it in 4 minutes.

Work with us

Whether you're a reader, a brand, a journalist, or a future Comparees team member โ€” here's how to reach the right person.
