1. Energy rating matters more than price
Appliances are the highest household electricity consumers — refrigerators run 24/7, ACs for 6+ hours a day, washing machines several times a week. A 5-star inverter AC saves $80–$150 per year over a 3-star unit. Over a 10-year lifespan, that's $1,000–$1,500 — easily the cost of a better unit upfront.
Key ratings to look for (BEE star labels in India, ENERGY STAR globally):
- Refrigerators: 4+ stars for daily use; frost-free with Inverter compressor is now standard.
- ACs: 5-star inverter is the sweet spot. ISEER ratings above 4.5 are excellent.
- Washing machines: Front-load with inverter motor saves 35–40% versus older top-load.
- TVs: LED/QLED draws far less than older Plasma. Look for "ENERGY STAR" certification.
2. Match capacity to household size
Oversizing wastes money upfront and on running costs. Our standard sizing for Indian households:

3. Check the warranty structure
Brands now compete on warranty length, but the fine print varies wildly. Three things to verify:
- Comprehensive vs compressor/motor: Most warranties cover the compressor or motor for 10 years but only the rest of the product for 1–2 years. Read carefully.
- On-site vs carry-in: Premium brands (LG, Samsung, Bosch) typically offer on-site service. Budget brands may require you to ship the unit.
- Service network: A brand with no service center in your city is a problem when something breaks. LG and Samsung have the deepest networks in India.
4. Plan for installation properly
Half of appliance complaints trace back to bad installation, not the product. Three rules:
- Always book through the brand: Free installation from official partners eliminates "informal" technicians who skip steps.
- ACs need professional copper piping: Insist on copper-only, never aluminum. Get a 5-meter pipe minimum even if your unit is closer — never coil leftover pipe.
- Front-load washers need level floors: They vibrate badly if even slightly tilted. Use the bubble level on the unit.
- Refrigerators need 4-inch wall clearance: Heat dissipation matters. Most failures trace back to enclosed installations.
5. Don't overpay for smart features
The "smart appliance" trend has driven premium pricing, but the actual utility varies wildly:
- Genuinely useful: Wi-Fi remote control on ACs (cool the room before you arrive), washer push notifications when cycle ends, smart inverter on refrigerators (real energy savings).
- Mostly marketing: Refrigerator cameras (you'll check once, then forget), voice assistants on dishwashers, AI cooking modes that just preset timers.
- Future-proof: SmartThings (Samsung) and ThinQ (LG) ecosystems are mature; Mi Home is growing. Avoid brands with proprietary closed apps.
6. When to buy for the best price
Appliance pricing follows predictable cycles:
- Big festive sales (Diwali, Onam, Christmas): 15–30% off, plus free installation and exchange offers.
- End-of-financial-year (March): 10–20% off as brands clear inventory.
- Pre-summer (March–April): Worst time to buy ACs — prices peak.
- Monsoon (July–September): Best AC discounts as demand drops.
- Black Friday / Pink Friday: Tech-focused discounts on TVs and small appliances.
Always cross-check the same SKU on the brand's own site, Amazon and Flipkart — price differences of 8–15% on identical units are common during sales.
