How to actually secure your home

Everything we've learned from 220+ brand tests and 18,000+ real-user reviews โ€” what to install, what to skip, and how to build a system that genuinely deters intruders.

1. Layered defense beats one expensive camera

A single $400 camera staring at one door does almost nothing if a burglar enters through a window. Four cheap cameras + a smart lock + entry sensors + a visible alarm sticker beats it every time. Effective home security has 4 layers:

  • Deterrence: Visible cameras, motion-activated lights, alarm signage โ€” 60%+ of burglars skip homes with visible security.
  • Detection: Entry sensors on doors/windows, motion sensors inside, glass-break sensors.
  • Documentation: Cameras at entries and high-traffic interior spaces โ€” for police, insurance and identification.
  • Response: Either family/neighbor alerts (push notifications) or professional monitoring with police dispatch.

2. Choose the right camera type

The 4 camera types and where each wins:

  • Wired CCTV/PoE (Power over Ethernet): CP Plus, Hikvision, Dahua. Best for permanent installations, multiple cameras and 24/7 recording. Highest video quality and zero subscription needed for storage (DVR/NVR built in). Requires professional installation.
  • Battery wire-free: Arlo, Eufy, Ring Stick Up. Best for renters and quick installations. Easy DIY, but you'll recharge batteries every 3โ€“6 months.
  • Plug-in wireless: Mi 360ยฐ, Qubo. Best for indoor monitoring (kids/pets/elders). Plug into wall socket, connect to Wi-Fi, done.
  • Video doorbells: Ring, Nest, Eufy. Specialized for the one most-monitored spot in any home. Most include package detection and porch motion alerts.

3. Resolution isn't everything

The marketing wars push 4K/8MP cameras, but for most homes 2K (2560x1440) is the sweet spot. Why:

  • 4K uses 4ร— the bandwidth and storage. Cloud subscriptions become expensive; local DVR fills 4ร— faster.
  • Most playback happens on phone screens. Where 1080p and 4K look identical.
  • Low-light matters more than resolution. A 1080p camera with great IR night vision beats a 4K camera that goes grainy after sunset. Check sensor size (1/2.8" or 1/2.7" is decent) and lens aperture (f/1.6 or wider).
  • 4K is genuinely useful for: long-distance parking lots, license plate capture, and large-property estates โ€” not 1,000 sq ft homes.

4. The subscription trap

Most consumer brands now require a subscription to actually access your footage. Read carefully:

  • Ring Protect: $5/month per camera or $10/month unlimited. Without it, you only see live view โ€” no recordings.
  • Nest Aware: $8/month basic, $15/month with 60-day history.
  • Arlo Secure: $8โ€“$20/month tiered. AI features require the highest tier.
  • Eufy: $0/month โ€” recordings stored locally on HomeBase hub.
  • CCTV/PoE systems: $0/month โ€” recordings on local DVR/NVR. Add cloud only if you want remote backup.

5-year math: 6 Ring cameras at $10/month = $600/year ร— 5 = $3,000 in fees alone. The same Eufy setup costs $0 in subscriptions over 5 years. Big difference if you have many cameras.

5. Placement matters more than the camera

A perfectly-placed $40 camera beats a poorly-placed $400 one. The 6 placement rules:

  • Front door, eye level (5-6 feet): Captures faces, not just hats.
  • Back door / patio: The most-used burglar entry after the front.
  • Ground-floor windows (large or hidden ones): Especially side and rear.
  • Driveway / garage: Captures vehicles and license plates.
  • Avoid pointing at the sun: Backlight wrecks all video. Adjust over the course of a day.
  • Avoid pointing into neighbors' windows: Privacy law violations in most jurisdictions; use privacy masking features if available.

6. Cameras are computers โ€” secure them

Internet-connected cameras have been hijacked at scale (Ring, Eufy, generic Chinese brands have all had incidents). Five rules:

  • Change the default password immediately. Use 14+ characters, not "password123."
  • Enable 2-factor authentication on the app account.
  • Keep firmware updated. Auto-update is your friend.
  • Buy from reputable brands with privacy policies you can actually find. Skip no-name "$15 Wi-Fi camera" deals.
  • Use end-to-end encryption where offered (Ring, Nest, Eufy all support it for premium cameras).

Smarter security decisions, guaranteed

The three principles that make our home security reviews different from everyone else's.

i

Installed and recorded

We install every system we recommend in real homes and record for at least 30 days. Real night vision, real motion accuracy, real false-alarm rates across $35,000+ in test gear.

ii

Subscription math run

We calculate 5-year total cost including hardware, subscriptions, and storage upgrades โ€” the real picture most reviews skip in favor of headline prices.

iii

Privacy audited

We check encryption claims, data sharing policies, and breach history. Brands with known security incidents get flagged โ€” your security gear shouldn't compromise privacy.

Home security, answered

Quick answers to the questions our readers ask most often about home security brands.

Which is the best home security brand in 2026?
Depends on what you need. For India CCTV setups, CP Plus or Hikvision. For video doorbells, Ring (Alexa) or Google Nest (Google ecosystem). For wire-free with no subscription, Eufy. For premium wire-free, Arlo. For whole-home alarm + monitoring, SimpliSafe. For smart locks, Godrej or Yale. For budget indoor cameras, Qubo or Mi. See our side-by-side comparisons for any direct match-up.
How much does a complete home security setup cost?
For a typical 2-3 BHK home: Entry tier ($250โ€“$500): 1 video doorbell + 2โ€“3 indoor/outdoor cameras (Qubo, Mi, Tapo). Mid-tier ($600โ€“$1,200): 4-camera CP Plus/Hikvision CCTV with DVR + Ring doorbell + smart lock. Premium ($1,500โ€“$3,500): Nest or Arlo cameras + Ring Alarm system + multiple smart locks + professional monitoring. Always factor in 5-year subscription costs โ€” Ring/Nest can add $600โ€“$1,200 in fees over 5 years; Eufy and wired CCTV are $0.
Should I get wired CCTV or wireless cameras?
For permanent homes, wired CCTV from CP Plus, Hikvision or Dahua wins โ€” better video quality, no battery hassles, no monthly fees, and 24/7 continuous recording on the DVR. For renters or quick setups, wireless from Eufy, Arlo or Ring is better โ€” DIY install, no drilling, take it with you when you move. Hybrid setups (wired for fixed outdoor coverage + wireless for flexible indoor cams) are increasingly common.
Do I really need a monthly subscription?
Depends on the brand. Ring, Nest, Arlo: Yes โ€” without a subscription, you only see live view, no recordings or playback. Plan for $5โ€“$15/month per camera or $10โ€“$20/month unlimited. Eufy, wired CCTV (CP Plus/Hikvision/Dahua): No โ€” recordings store locally on a HomeBase hub or DVR/NVR. SimpliSafe alarm system: Optional $30/month for 24/7 professional monitoring with police dispatch; works without. The 5-year math matters: 5 Ring cameras ร— $10/month ร— 60 months = $3,000 in fees on top of hardware.
Are smart locks safe? Can they be hacked?
Reputable smart locks from Godrej, Yale, August and Schlage are mechanically as secure as good traditional deadbolts and offer the same break-in resistance ratings. The "hacking" risk is mostly weak passwords on your phone/app โ€” use a strong password and 2FA. Budget no-name smart locks have had Bluetooth vulnerabilities; stick to reputable brands and keep firmware updated. A smart lock is generally safer than a traditional lock because you can't lose/copy keys, audit who's been at the door, and instantly revoke access.
What resolution do I need โ€” 1080p, 2K, or 4K?
2K (2560x1440) is the sweet spot for most homes. 1080p is fine for indoor monitoring (kids, pets) and low-traffic areas. 4K is only genuinely useful for large properties, long driveways, or license plate capture โ€” and it uses 4ร— the bandwidth/storage. More important than resolution: sensor size (1/2.8" or larger), aperture (f/1.6 or wider for low light) and IR night vision range. A 1080p camera with great low-light performance beats a 4K camera that goes grainy after sunset.
Where can I find brand-vs-brand comparisons before buying?
That's exactly what we do at Comparees. Browse all home security comparisons for head-to-head reviews like CP Plus vs Hikvision, Ring vs Nest, or Eufy vs Arlo. Each comparison ranks both brands across 8โ€“10 weighted criteria with real night vision tests, motion detection accuracy and 6+ month durability data.
